Calibration and verification are two terms often used interchangeably, but they refer to different processes in the field of metrology.
- Calibration is comparing a device under test of an unknown value with a reference standard of a known value.
- Verification ensures equipment operates according to its stated operating specifications.
Calibration ensures the measurement accuracy of an instrument meets a known standard; this standard can be:
- a) Primary standard, which is considered as reference standards with traceability from NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) or
- b) Transfer standard, an instrument directly calibrated using a primary standard.
This ensures the instrument provides accurate and reliable measurements within the specified range. During the calibration process, adjustments are made to the instrument’s settings, and a calibration certificate is issued to document the results.
On the other hand, verification aims to ensure that a piece of equipment works according to the manufacturer’s specifications and functions without making any adjustments. Verification may be performed as part of routine maintenance and confirm that the instruments are still accurate after calibrating or processing daily before using the equipment.
Both processes are essential for ensuring that instruments and devices provide accurate and reliable measurements, and the results of both processes are documented in certificates.
To put it simply, calibration is like taking your car to the mechanic for a tune-up. The mechanic checks and adjusts various components to ensure that your car is running properly and efficiently. Verification, on the other hand, is like checking the tire pressure on your car. You are not making any adjustments, but you are checking to make sure that everything is working as it should be.
