Dimensional rental: what to check when it arrives

  • Clean jaws, anvils and measuring faces, then check zero before use.
  • Close caliper jaws and look for light between the faces. Visible light means wear that will show up as error.
  • Let instruments and parts reach the same temperature. Steel grows about 6.4 millionths of an inch per inch for every degree Fahrenheit.
  • Use the ratchet or friction thimble on a micrometer so the measuring force is the same every time.

What calibration comes with the rental?

Every rental ships with a current calibration certificate from a Techmaster laboratory. Check that its due date covers your last day of testing and that it covers the ranges you will use.

1-D and 2-D dimensional calibration, including 2-D non-contact vision, surface plates and thread plug and ring gages, is on the ANAB scope at Santa Clara only. Gauge blocks to 12 in and ring gages to 6.4 in are accredited at San Antonio. Exact ranges and uncertainties are on our published accreditation scope.

How often should a digital caliper be calibrated?
Many quality systems start at 12 months and shorten the interval for heavy use or after a drop. Digital calipers are the dimensional instrument we calibrate most often. Check jaw wear and zero between calibrations and set the interval from your own as-found results.
How do I rent from Techmaster?
Send the model or the specification it must meet, your start date, the last day you need it and the certificate level you need. We confirm availability and terms, then ship the instrument with its certificate or deliver it locally in Southern California, Silicon Valley or the Orlando area.
