Common RF and microwave faults we see

  • Input mixer or attenuator damage from overpower or ESD, the most common spectrum analyzer failure. It shows as low or missing signals, a raised noise floor or a front-end error.
  • Worn or damaged RF connectors. Pin depth out of tolerance on 3.5 mm and 2.92 mm ports degrades match and can damage mating cables.
  • Reference oscillator drift or failure, seen as frequency error or loss of lock to an external 10 MHz reference.
  • Power sensor damage after overload, seen as zeroing errors or readings that fail cal factor checks.
  • Signal generator output faults: unleveled output, flatness errors or a failed output attenuator.

How does a repair work?

Send the make, model and serial number with a description of the fault and any error codes. We diagnose the fault and send a quote with the expected timeline and warranty terms for your approval. After repair, the instrument is calibrated and returned with its certificate.

What calibration comes after the repair?

RF and microwave calibration is on Techmaster’s ANAB ISO/IEC 17025 scope at Vista, Santa Clara and Orlando, including power sensor cal factors and SSB phase noise to 50 GHz and noise figure to 26.5 GHz. It is not performed at San Antonio. Exact ranges and uncertainties are on our published accreditation scope.
