Time and frequency rental: what to check when it arrives

  • Check the timebase, not just the display digits. A counter's accuracy is usually limited by timebase aging and temperature stability.
  • Feed an external 10 MHz reference, such as a GPS-disciplined oscillator, when you need better accuracy than the internal timebase gives.
  • Let an oven-controlled timebase warm up fully before measurements that depend on it.
  • Match the input impedance, 50 Ω or 1 MΩ, and the coupling to your signal source.

What calibration comes with the rental?

Every rental ships with a current calibration certificate from a Techmaster laboratory. Check that its due date covers your last day of testing and that it covers the ranges you will use.

How accurate is a rented frequency counter?
That depends mostly on its timebase. A standard timebase drifts more each year than an oven-controlled one, so the option fitted matters more than the number of digits. Tell us the accuracy you need and we confirm a counter or suggest an external reference.
