Oscilloscope Rental: What to Specify

November 3, 2026

TL;DR: Bandwidth is the number on every oscilloscope rental quote, and it is rarely what makes a rental fail. Sample rate with all channels on, memory depth, the probes and the licensed decode options decide whether the scope that arrives can capture your signal. Confirm the certificate and its remaining validity before the order.

Oscilloscope rental: the specifications that decide whether it can do the job.

What decides an oscilloscope rental?

An oscilloscope rental is the short-term hire of a calibrated scope sized to one measurement task, and the task is defined by edge speed, capture length and channel count rather than by bandwidth alone. A rental quoted on bandwidth only routinely arrives with too little memory, the wrong probes or no decode licence.

Rentals usually exist for a reason: a debug campaign, a qualification run or a customer witness test. Each has a fixed window, so a specification gap discovered on day one costs a large share of the hire.

How to specify an oscilloscope rental: bandwidth for the edge, sample rate per channel, memory depth, channels, probes, decode and analysis licences
Six things to specify when renting an oscilloscope.

Why can the sample rate on the quote be misleading?

Because the headline figure is often the single-channel rate. On many scopes the sample rate is shared between channels, so it can halve when all channels are switched on. Ask for the rate with the number of channels you will actually use.

Memory depth works the same way: it is shared, and it decides how long the scope sustains that rate. Specify the longest capture you need at the sample rate you need, and the memory requirement follows.

Specification, what it decides, when it binds

SpecificationWhat it decidesWhen it is the constraint
BandwidthThe fastest edge you can see faithfullyRise-time and signal-integrity work
Sample rate per channelTime resolution with all channels onMulti-channel timing
Memory depthCapture length at full sample rateRare glitches, long sequences
Analog and digital channelsHow many signals at one momentBus and control timing
ProbesSystem bandwidth and circuit loadingHigh-speed, differential, high-voltage
Decode and analysis licencesProtocol and power measurementsSerial bus debug, compliance

Does a rented oscilloscope arrive calibrated?

It should, and the details matter more than the fact. Confirm the certificate level, that it covers the channels and bandwidth you will use, and that it stays in date until your last measurement day. Ask us about availability and certificate terms for the model you need.

The certificate behind a rental is covered in whether used or rented equipment needs calibration and accredited versus NIST-traceable. What the calibration itself verifies: the oscilloscope calibration procedure, oscilloscope calibration cost and turnaround and how often to calibrate an oscilloscope. If your own scope failed, see oscilloscope repair. Other RF rentals: signal generator rental and network analyzer rental.

Frequently asked questions

What should I specify when renting an oscilloscope?

Bandwidth sized to the fastest edge you must see, sample rate with all the channels you need switched on, memory depth for your capture length, the number of analog and digital channels, the probes, any decode or analysis licences, and the calibration certificate with its remaining validity.

How much bandwidth do I need?

Enough for the fastest rise time you need to measure, not the clock frequency. For digital work a common rule of thumb is several times the highest fundamental frequency, and the probe has to support the same bandwidth or it becomes the limit.

Why does memory depth matter on a rental?

Memory decides how long the scope can capture at full sample rate. On a long acquisition a short-memory scope lowers its sample rate to fit, and fast glitches disappear from the capture without any warning on the screen.

Where does Techmaster calibrate oscilloscopes?

Oscilloscope calibration is on the accredited scope at all four laboratories. Leveled sine to 2.1 GHz is accredited at Vista CA, Santa Clara CA and Orlando FL, and San Antonio TX covers oscilloscopes to 600 MHz, so higher-bandwidth scopes are routed accordingly.

Techmaster Electronics is accredited by ANAB to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 under certificate AC-1736, across eight accredited calibration fields at four US laboratories, Vista CA, Santa Clara CA, Orlando FL and San Antonio TX. Ask us to confirm your specific instrument and parameter ranges against the current scope before shipping.

Send us the model list. We will come back with an itemized quote, the service level per instrument, and which items sit inside our ANAB accredited scope, usually within one business day. Request a quote.

Techmaster Electronics, LLC is an independent ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited calibration laboratory. We are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by any manufacturer named on this page.
