Network Analyzer Rental: The VNA Is the System, Not the Box

September 30, 2026

TL;DR: A network analyzer rental is the system, not the box: frequency range and port count with margin, a calibration kit in the same connector family as your device, certificates for both the analyzer and the kit, phase-stable test-port cables, and the software options your measurement needs licensed. Rent for the whole program, through verification.

Network analyzers, ECal modules and cal kits were a consistent cluster in the requests reaching our RF laboratories over the last quarter. Rentals come from design teams who need a VNA for one program and from labs whose owned analyzer is out for calibration. Both groups make the same mistake: they specify the analyzer and forget the kit.

What must a network analyzer rental ship with?

Network analyzer rental checklist: frequency and ports, cal kit, certificates, cables, options, term
Six things that turn a rented VNA into a measurement system.

Frequency range to cover the top of your band with margin, and enough ports, two for most work, four for differential or multiport devices. A mechanical or electronic cal kit matching your DUT’s connector family, with its own certificate. Phase-stable cables torqued correctly, because cable flex is the leading source of drift in a rented setup. And the options: time-domain, frequency offset or fixture removal are licensed features, and a rental without them is a rental that cannot do the job.

Why does the cal kit’s certificate matter more than the analyzer’s?

Because the user calibration you perform with the kit is the correction the analyzer applies to every measurement. If the kit’s standards are wrong, every S-parameter is wrong by the same amount, however good the analyzer. The relationship between instrument calibration and user calibration is explained in network analyzer calibration, and the interval question for electronic kits in ECal module calibration interval.

Rent or buy a VNA?

Rent for a bounded program, a frequency range you rarely need, or the weeks your owned analyzer is away. Buy when the analyzer runs weekly. The logic follows renting versus buying test equipment; the VNA-specific twist is that the kit and cables are a significant share of the cost either way.

What RF capability stands behind the rental?

Techmaster’s RF and microwave calibration, including network analyzer system verification on 7 mm, N-type, 3.5 mm and 2.4 mm test ports, and frequency source and measurement to 50 GHz, is performed at its Vista and Santa Clara, California and Orlando, Florida laboratories on the ANAB ISO/IEC 17025 scope (Cert. AC-1736). RF work is not performed at the San Antonio laboratory.

Frequently asked questions

Does a network analyzer rental include the calibration kit?

It must. A VNA without a cal kit in the same connector family as your device is not a measurement instrument. Confirm the kit type (mechanical or electronic), connector family and its calibration certificate before the rental ships.

Which connector type should I ask for?

The same family as your device under test. Mismatched connectors mean adapters, and every adapter adds uncertainty and a new failure point. If your DUT is 2.92 mm, ask for a 2.92 mm kit and cables.

Are the VNA and the cal kit both calibrated?

Both carry calibration status and both should be current. The kit’s certificate is the one that decides the quality of your user calibration, so ask for it specifically.

How long should I rent a VNA for?

For the whole program: design, tune, verify, document. A rental that ends before verification is a rental you re-order. Extensions are usually easier to arrange than a second delivery.

The bottom line

Specify the kit and cables as carefully as the analyzer, check both certificates, and rent through verification. Send your DUT connector type and top frequency with the enquiry.
