TL;DR: A multifunction calibrator rental gives you a 5522A-class reference for a week, a month, or a quarter without a capital purchase. It is only useful if it arrives inside its own calibration interval with the certificate in the case, with the full lead and adapter set, and with a swap plan if it fails. Log its certificate number against everything you check with it.
Multifunction calibrators are the instrument labs most often ask to rent, and for a simple reason: they are expensive, they sit idle between sweeps, and the week you need one is usually the week yours is away for its own calibration. Over the last quarter, requests for multifunction and process calibrators were the second-largest cluster reaching our labs, and several of them were rentals rather than calibrations.
What should a multifunction calibrator rental include?

The certificate first. The rental unit is your reference for the period, so it has to be in date on arrival and stay in date for the whole term. Then the accessories: test leads, thermocouple adapters, the pressure module coupler if you are checking pressure, and the transit case. A calibrator without its lead set calibrates nothing. Then the term, the swap plan, and insured shipping both ways, a multifunction calibrator is a high-value instrument, and the quote should say who carries the risk in transit.
When does renting beat buying?
Renting wins when the need is bounded: a catch-up sweep after an audit finding, a lab move, a new product line that needs a few dozen meters verified once, or the gap while your own calibrator is in for service. Buying wins when the calibrator runs weekly. The decision logic is the same one we set out for renting versus buying a multimeter and an electronic load, scaled up by an order of magnitude in price.
What can I actually do with a rented calibrator?
Intermediate checks and in-house verification, where your quality system permits them. The habits in intermediate checks between calibrations apply directly. What a rental does not do is turn your bench into an accredited laboratory: instruments that need an accredited certificate still come to a lab whose accredited scope covers the parameter. Techmaster holds ANAB accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (Cert. AC-1736) at four US laboratories, and calibrates the multifunction calibrators themselves, see multimeter calibration for the instruments a calibrator most often checks.
How do I keep traceability after the rental goes back?
Record the rental’s model, serial number and certificate number in your own log, next to each instrument you checked with it and the date. When the unit is returned, that log is the only evidence that your checks were made against a traceable reference. The same record feeds your interval decisions later.
Frequently asked questions
Does a rented multifunction calibrator come with a calibration certificate?
It must, or it is not a reference. The unit should arrive inside its own calibration interval with the certificate in the case, and the calibration data available on request. Log the certificate number against every instrument you check with it so your traceability chain survives after the rental goes back.
How long can I rent a multifunction calibrator for?
Terms run from a week for a catch-up sweep to a quarter while your own unit is in for repair. Price should scale with the term rather than jump. Tell us the job and we will suggest the shortest term that actually covers it.
What if the rental unit fails or drifts during my rental?
Ask about the swap plan before you book. A rental with a same-class replacement path is worth more than a cheaper one without, because a reference that fails mid-term costs you the whole week, not just the day.
Can I use a rented calibrator to calibrate my own instruments and issue certificates?
You can use it for in-house verification and intermediate checks if your quality system allows it and the calibrator’s certificate and uncertainty support the tolerances you test to. For accredited certificates your instruments still need to come to an accredited laboratory.
The bottom line
Rent the reference, not just the box: certificate in date, leads included, a swap plan, and your own log of what it touched. Ask us about current availability and term pricing when you request a quote.
