Therefore, these areas must have rigorously controlled environments with low levels of environmental contaminants such as dust particles, microorganisms, aerosol particles, and chemical vapors that can be risk factors for the operation of these areas.

A cleanroom should be designed, constructed, operated, and maintained to minimize the introduction, generation, and retention of particulate matter within the room and in which other relevant parameters (temperature, humidity, and pressure) are controlled as necessary.

In technical terms, a clean room is a space in which incoming air is filtered and then continuously circulated through high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA), and ultra-low particulate air (ULPA) filters to remove internally generated contaminants.

Clean rooms are classified according to the number and size of particles per unit volume. That is the concentration of particles. There are nine classifications.
