ECal (electronic calibration) module calibration re-characterizes the impedance standards stored inside a VNA ECal module against NIST-traceable references under ISO/IEC 17025, restoring its rated uncertainty. Techmaster calibrates the full Keysight ECal range — RF, microwave, multiport and USB modules, including the latest N7564A and N7564AEP — on an ANAB-accredited scope, in-lab or on-site across the USA, so you can avoid long factory return times.
If your lab runs a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA), the ECal (electronic calibration) module is the single most important accessory you own. It defines the reference plane for every S-parameter measurement you make — and like any reference standard, it is only as trustworthy as its last calibration.
What is an ECal module — and why does it need calibration?
An ECal module is a solid-state, electronically-switched calibration standard. Instead of manually connecting open, short, load and thru standards from a mechanical cal kit, you connect a single module over USB and let the VNA step through the standards automatically — faster, more repeatable, and with far less connector wear.
But an ECal module is not “calibration-free.” Each module contains a set of characterized impedance standards stored in internal memory, and that stored characterization is itself a measurement that ages. Connector wear, mechanical shock, temperature cycling and simple drift all degrade the data, which is why manufacturers specify a recommended recalibration interval (typically 12 months). Recalibration re-characterizes the module against NIST-traceable standards and restores its rated uncertainty.
The hidden cost of sending modules back to the factory
For one module due once a year, shipping it back to the manufacturer may seem fine. At scale it becomes one of the biggest sources of test-bench downtime in the building: weeks of transit and queue time, two-way insured freight of a fragile high-value asset, and support handled across time zones — all while your VNA can’t run accredited measurements.
Calibrate with Techmaster (local & accredited)
- Days, not weeks — minimal bench downtime
- ANAB-accredited ISO/IEC 17025 certificate
- NIST-traceable standards
- No long-haul freight on a fragile RF asset
- Talk to US-based metrology engineers
Ship it back to the factory
- 4–8+ week turnaround is common
- VNA can’t run accredited sweeps meanwhile
- Two-way insured freight cost & risk
- Cross-queue, limited expedite control
ECal modules Techmaster calibrates
We have built our ISO/IEC 17025 scope to match the Keysight ECal portfolio module-for-module — from the legacy RF 8509x family to the latest USB modules. If you own it, there is a very good chance we already calibrate it.

Why Techmaster for ECal calibration
Techmaster is an ANAB-accredited ISO/IEC 17025 calibration laboratory serving RF, semiconductor and electronics manufacturers across the USA. For ECal modules that means full-portfolio coverage including the latest N7564A/N7564AEP, NIST-traceable results, dramatically shorter turnaround than an overseas factory return, no long-haul freight risk, and US-based metrology engineers you can actually reach — with expedite options when a module is on the critical path.
How the process works
1. Tell us your module (e.g. N7551A, N4691B, N7564A) and its due date. 2. We confirm coverage and turnaround and arrange pickup or shipment. 3. Your module is re-characterized against NIST-traceable standards in our ISO/IEC 17025 lab. 4. You receive an ANAB-accredited certificate and your module back, fast. 5. We help you stay ahead of the next due date so you’re never caught off-guard.
An out-of-cal ECal module doesn’t announce itself — it just quietly adds uncertainty to every measurement until an audit or a failed correlation finds it for you. Staying on a disciplined recalibration schedule with an accredited lab is the cheapest insurance you can buy for your RF test program.
Frequently asked questions
What is ECal module calibration?
ECal module calibration is the documented re-characterization of the impedance standards stored inside an electronic calibration module, compared against NIST-traceable references under ISO/IEC 17025. It restores the module’s rated measurement uncertainty so your VNA calibrations stay trustworthy, and is issued on an ANAB-accredited certificate.
How often should an ECal module be calibrated?
Manufacturers typically specify a 12-month recalibration interval, and sooner after mechanical shock, a dropped module, or a suspect measurement. Because the module’s standards are stored data that drifts with connector wear and time, skipping the interval quietly adds uncertainty to every VNA sweep.
Which ECal models do you calibrate?
Techmaster’s accredited scope covers the full Keysight ECal range: the 8509x RF family, the N469x microwave 2-port modules, the N443x/N433x multiport and 4-port modules, the N75xx USB modules, and the latest N7564A and N7564AEP. If you don’t see your exact model, contact us — our scope is continually expanding.
Is the calibration ISO 17025 accredited and NIST-traceable?
Yes. ECal module calibration is performed on an ANAB-accredited ISO/IEC 17025 scope with NIST-traceable standards, and the certificate reports as-found/as-left data with measurement uncertainty.
Can I calibrate an ECal module locally instead of shipping it back to the manufacturer?
Yes — that is the main advantage. Techmaster provides accredited ECal calibration in the USA with fast turnaround, so you avoid weeks of international shipping and factory queue time while a critical module sits idle.
